For a relatively small community, Big Bear is fortunate to have excellent health care services. This includes a top rated hospital (4 out of 5 stars), private practice doctors and dentists, ambulance services, chiropractors, optometrists, and two large chain pharmacies. Big Bear also has two excellent veterinary clinics to care for our pets and the occasional injured wild animal.
The “Bear Valley Community Healthcare District” encompasses our local hospital with emergency services, acute care, radiology, respiratory and physical therapy, medical laboratory, and a skilled nursing facility. Bear Valley Community Hospital provides services to the residents, 2nd homeowners, and visitors of Big Bear Valley who are in need of medical care.
The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, a government sponsored national hospital survey that asks patients about their experiences during a recent hospital stay continually monitors patient satisfaction. Among the 10 questions asked about a patients’ hospital experience, the Bear Valley Community Hospital ranks above the California and National Average.
The Emergency Department is a seven bed unit providing initial evaluations and treatment to pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. The department is staffed 24 hours per day with an emergency physician and fully trained support staff. The emergency department averages close to 400 visits per month.
Our hospital also houses one of the finest long-term nursing facilities in Southern California. The Skilled Nursing Facility, located at Bear Valley Community Hospital, has 21 beds that are designated for long term care or short term rehabilitation. They have a caring, friendly, loving, skilled and dedicated staff that my family knows first-hand. When my mom suffered a stroke last year we were able to transfer her to the “SNIF” Unit and she has steadily improved beyond all expectations. We credit the nurses and therapists at the hospital for her amazing recovery.
There are two clinics associated with the healthcare district, the Family Health Center, located next to the hospital on Summit Blvd. and the Rural Health Clinic, located on Big Bear Blvd. in Big Bear City. They provide services for the whole family, including family practice, dental services, and OB/GYN. The two clinics see over 1000 patients per month and have had a 26% growth in the last year.
Another service provided the healthcare district is the Mom and Dad Project. The Bear Valley Community Hospital (BVCH) Mom and Dad Project is Big Bears’ only parenting education and resource center. They offer parenting classes beginning with child birth, and going all the way through parenting a teenager. The BVCH Mom and Dad Project also offers nurturing pre-natal, nurturing father, and nurturing teen parent programs.
