Every Halloween the City of Big Bear Lake throws a great party in the village. The streets are blocked off and hundreds of costumed kids of all ages walk business to business and collect candy from local businesses and vendors. It’s really a blast. Some parents dress up right along with their kids. In fact, I saw Tyler Wood and son decked out head to toe in matching fly-fishermen outfits, looking like they just walked out of The Banana Republic.
This was my first “Halloween in the Village” in several years. My daughter’s a senior in high school now but walking through the village and seeing all the kids brought back some great memories. I can still remember the ladybug outfit she wore that first year. And how frightened she was when she saw a real witch handing out candy. I think I had more fun than she did.
It’s things like this that remind me how much I love living here. Some people visit Big Bear for the clean mountain air and the postcard scenery. And some people come to Big Bear for the year-round outdoor activities. But those who choose to live here do so because of the sense of community we have up here. There’s a feeling you get once you’ve lived here awhile that you just don’t find in other towns. It’s the same feeling you get as you drive up the mountain after spending time in the flatlands. Big Bear just feels like home.
