Sugarloaf
Sugarloaf is a residential area south of Big Bear City, named for the 9,952’ mountain peak that serves as its backdrop, Sugarloaf Mountain. Originally subdivided in the 1940’s, the lots were intended to be sold as “campsites.” Because of the compact lot sizes, much of Sugarloaf was developed with smaller homes – hence it has become one of the most affordable areas in the Big Bear Valley, and a popular location for weekend cabins.
Home styles in Sugarloaf range from the popular “Gambrel” style, to Chalets, Victorians, as well as full-log and custom designs on multi-lot parcels. The smaller lot sizes offer low-maintenance yard upkeep, making it popular for second-home owners. Mostly level and with easy access, the area is beautifully treed for a real “mountain feel,” and when the many oak trees turn color in October it’s truly a “fall wonderland!”
Because of the affordability, Sugarloaf is also an ideal choice for first-time buyers. With Big Bear High School, Baldwin Lane Elementary school and Sugarloaf Park located at the edge of the community, it is also popular with families. The area is served by a quaint “General Store”, its own post office, and full-time fire station. With much of the area bordered by National Forest and other undeveloped acreage, it offers easy access to hiking trails.
At an elevation of 7,093’, for commuters or just that “weekend trip to the cabin,” Sugarloaf is conveniently located just off Hwy 38 to Redlands, and offers paved and maintained roads (including snow removal) for ease of access year ‘round. Just minutes to the Big Bear City business district and airport, it’s just a bit longer drive to the shopping and dining venues in Big Bear Lake, the lake and marinas, and two winter resorts.
Whether you are looking for a charming weekend retreat, or a full-time family or retirement home, Sugarloaf offers a unique combination of value, a true “neighborhood” feel, and mountain atmosphere. There’s something for everyone!
