Fawnskin? What is that? Where is it? Why would I want to know about it?

There are plenty of reasons to get to know Fawnskin.

The quaint, lakeside town is located on the quieter, northwestern shore of Big Bear Lake. It is one of the many small communities that make up Big Bear Valley. Homes in Fawnskin are comparable in price to those located on the south side of the lake. The premium for these homes is placed more on being away from it all, instead of being in close proximity to the action. Even though Fawnskin is small and slightly more secluded, it does have draws that keep people heading to the north shore to find out what it is all about.

As you wind your way along North Shore Drive, you get to experience views of the lake on one side, and the forest on the other. You will see that the homes are scattered up against the national forest as well as down near the lakeside and are generally well treed. The number of available homes in the area is fewer than other locations in Big Bear. When people buy here, they kick up their feet and stay awhile. If you are lucky enough to find a home up on one of Fawnskin’s hillsides you will get an incredible view of the lake, both ski resorts and majestic San Gorgonio in addition to the surrounding mountains. No other location in Big Bear can boast those views! Homes in the area start around $179,000 for a two bedroom 1 bath home, and lakefronts currently range between $799,999 and $2 million.

This little lakeside community is designated as a protective habitat for Bald Eagles from the months of November to April. There are endless miles of forest trails for hiking and mountain biking, a marina, public boat launch, restaurants, a post office and annual spawning trout in Grout Creek that draw a crowd each spring. Fawnskin hosts two parks and its own Fire Department. If you want some fun activities, Captain John’s Marina is the site of the annual Paddlefest each July, which features kayak and stand up paddling lessons, rentals and a race to finish the weekend! For hiking enthusiasts, in addition to the many forest trails, the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) runs along the ridge of the mountain on that side of the valley. The Doo Dah parade in August has earned the honor of being the shortest parade in the Guiness Book of World Records and is part of the annual Old Miner’s Day festivities. You can check out the annual Reinassance and Pirate Fairs that are held at the historical Pedderson Saw Mill or pop in for a fantastic meal at North Shore Café.

While Fawnskin may not be for everyone, the people who live over on that part of the north shore love it!  So if you want to start looking in Fawnskin for your next mountain get away, head over to the north shore and check it out! Lots of fun, laughter, and good times are there for those who venture over.
