Snow and Real Estate

If you purchased a home in Big Bear during the summer months you probably weren’t thinking about things like blowing and drifting snow or sheets of ice around your property. The sun is slowly sinking to its lowest point in the sky and many areas will be shaded by trees or mountains for a large part of the day. Some winters will have snow storms one after the other. Other years can be super dry with hardly any snowfall. No matter what the forecasters say, we just don’t know what will happen until it happens.

While you still have the time, do yourself a favor, and try to picture those wintry conditions and prepare for the months ahead. If you plan on using your Big Bear vacation home at all this winter you’ll need to make arrangements with a local snow removal company. But outside of that, unless you’ve experienced a full winter in your Big Bear home, no matter what you do, you’re probably going to be caught unprepared.

So what’s the answer? Buy a couple of good snow shovels and a few bags of snowmelt (from a local supplier, of course) and then focus on the condition of your ski and snowboard equipment. Clear your schedule to make sure you get to enjoy what the winters up here are all about – skiing, snowboarding, snow-shoeing, and playing in the snow. It’s why you bought your Big Bear home in the first place.

If you’re going to be spending more than just a few days in Big Bear this winter you might as well buy a season pass for Snow Summit and Bear Mountain. A few years back the ski resorts decided to make the lift tickets interchangeable and that means that one ticket buys access to both mountains. So now, I’ll ski Snow Summit for most of the morning and enjoy lunch at one of the mountaintop restaurants and then jump on the shuttle to Bear Mountain. I used to snowboard but my knees aren’t what they used to be so now I’m back on skis. Just the same, I still love to watch the kids on the half-pipe and rails just above the main deck. After a few runs at Bear Mountain I’ll grab a table on the deck, order a beer, and watch one of the best shows in California.

See you on the slopes!
