Restaurants in the mountains have long been known for their piles of pancakes and American cuisine. But recently, new Big Bear Lake restaurants serve a variety of ethnic flavors and gourmet ingredients to this community.
When we first moved to Big Bear from Los Angeles sixteen years ago, we used to joke about the lack of restaurant ambience. At that time, few restaurants even used linen service. The Iron Squirrel, Fred & Marys, Madlons and Stillwells at Northwoods were among the best choices. While Madlons (Big Bear City) and Northwoods (Big Bear Lake) continue with fine dining, several new venues brighten our selection.
If you’re in the neighborhood of the Village and love Italian food, try the Peppercorn Grille. Both lunch and dinner menus are moderately priced. Lunch offers well crafted sandwiches. Their selection includes seared ahi tuna, ground angus burgers and vegetarian portobello sandwiches. You can also choose from a variety of pastas. Cheese tortellini with chicken breast is popular, and the home-made pasta with ground beef is to be savored. We enjoy the mushroom spinach lasagna.
The dinner menu offers lobster ravioli, seafood bouillabaisse, charbroiled rack of lamb and vegetarian pastas. The Peppercorn Grille offers cocktails, imported and domestic beers, champagne and an extensive wine list. They prepare both Tiramisu and traditional New York cheesecakes in-house!
The Himalayan Restaurant is also located in the Village. They serve authentic Nepalese and Indian food. Arrive early and come prepared to spend a little time. Start with an appetizer of pakoras and chai tea and relax while they prepare the rest of your meal. The extensive menu includes a variety of excellent curries (we order our curry mild and ask for chutnies and hot sauce on the side), both meat and vegetarian. Check out their specialty bread; naan, garlic naan and chapaties (similar to wheat tortillas). We enjoy sharing several dishes with an order of rice. The bar offers unusual beers from India (Yeti anyone?), wines and champagne. Prices are moderate and children are welcome.
Nottingham’s at the Robinhood Resort offers great food, a full bar and live entertainment. They’re also in the Village, on Bartlett. B’s Backyard BBQ is a lakeside restaurant with a full bar and the best BBQ on the mountain. A local favorite is Get The Burger across from the CVS pharmacy on Big Bear Boulevard. This is a fun relaxing place to enjoy gourmet burgers, fries and drinks.
